Digital Literacy

How have you developed or demonstrated this competency this semester?

I use digital tools all of the time in my work at the press and the lab. At the press, it is often times difficult to find accurate publishing information because works are often published in multiple places by multiple different publishing houses. I have found some sources, such as HFS books for Wesleyan-published books, that I now trust to give me accurate information. Working at the press has also introduced me to different applications such as AllBooks and FileMaker through which we process book orders and contracts. Although these are older applications, I am more fluent in them after this semester, which is an improvement in digital literacy. In the lab, I learned how to use JASP, a very user-friendly statistics program, to analyze atypical data from a study performed before I joined the lab. As someone who has very little computer programming, it was surprisingly not very difficult, but it also has made me realize that as someone interested in research, I need to become more well-versed in computer programming, especially for statistics. This is what mainly led me to enroll in psych stats for next semester. Also in lab, I have been working on reading and summarizing research articles to be added to a literature review for a currently partially written study. I mostly look for these articles on Google Scholar as I have found that it provides the greatest variety of results of accessible research. Navigating online journals is another digital literacy skill that I have worked on this semester, and I hope to continue to improve my abilities to efficiently and effectively draw information from digital sources.
